Community/Alternative Spaces
Is it out of the scope of indylist’s objectives to include places that add to the growth of community but aren’t necessarily based around monetary transactions?
I’m thinking a lot about this, and could elaborate. I just don’t want to derail the thread with a long-ass reply. Any comments would be awesome.

Anything that brings people together and supports community is fair game for Indylist. Right now the site is really setup to deal with small shops and restaurants, but our plan is to expand that scope to include events and other non-store places.
So, please elaborate!

I think that Indylist is very interesting in that it has forced me to re-examine what a business is and does, and how that differs from other businesses and maybe non-businesses that offer a cultural experience. I’m still thinking.
Some examples of ‘alternative spaces’ I had in mind are things like:
There are many, many artists collectives in Chicago that are doing projects for and with their communities, that I think would be great to have on a list. But that might just be because I really them and that I’m currently researching and writing about them : ).
What do you think?

Alternative spaces are exactly the kind of places we want to support. Independent businesses were just the obvious place to start, but not that we have that working pretty well it is good to consider what direction we want the site to move in.
Right now, I can add a category for alternative spaces- I guess they go in Services > Art and Alternative Spaces? (We can easily move places anyway, so if we decide this doesn’t make sense in the future it’s easy to adjust.)
We’re looking at ways to expand the site’s features, and something that we’re already planning for is users that have places (stores or alternative spaces or whatever) to take ownership of that place’s page, and post events in a special section on it. So art shows/concerts/etc. could be listed there.
What are some other things we could do to better suite the site to alternative places?
